The Hospital Standardized Mortality Ratio (HSMR) is used in several countries (UK, US, Canada, Sweden, Denmark, Australia). In the Netherlands, the HSMR was first calculated in 2005. Since then de Praktijk Index, Prismant and Imperial College have worked together to further develop the Dutch HSMR model. As in other countries, every year a new model is determined.
HSMR in the Netherlands
In the Netherlands, the HSMR is not published at a hospital level. However, the Healthcare Inspectorate is looking into the possibilities of the HSMR as a public indicator for hospitals. Currently research is being done on the validity of the indicator and the pro’s and cons of publication of the HSMR.
Meanwhile, the HSMR methodology is being used by more and more Dutch hospitals to gain insight in their standardized mortality rates. Not only at a hospital level, but even more on the level of diagnoses- and procedure groups. Hospitals use it to gain insight in their own outcomes and identify possibilities for improvement of care.
Real Time Monitoring
De Praktijk Index is the exclusive partner of Dr Foster to bring Real Time Monitoring (RTM) of (H)SMR, length of stay, readmission and day case rates to the Dutch market. Currently, sixteen Dutch hospitals use RTM since the introduction in July 2007.
